Shall I Play for You?
The beautiful song of our lives
The Little Drummer Boy has always been a constant, staple song in my household for many years. Specifically, for KING & COUNTRY’S rendition of it has been played on repeat throughout the years. In the heat of summer days and cold winter evenings—in all seasons, my kids would sit with their toy drums (or pillows if the drums weren’t available) and using drumsticks (or chopsticks), they would drum and drum, for hours. I’m sure we’ve probably streamed/listened to that particular song so much that we sent them on vacation with royalties made.
This song holds a lot of nostalgia for me, for many reasons. But this year, I’m hearing the words a little differently, and holding them up to view through a different lens in my life. I want to invite you to do the same.
What song is God inviting you to play for Him, through the music of your life?
Come they told me, pa rum pum pum pum
A newborn King to see, pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Our everyday lives are sacredly holy to the Trinity. We sing Their glory as we live, work, and breathe. We inhale with lungs that were sewn together with Love. We were sung over as our bodies were forming in the hiddenness of the womb.
The delight.
The joy.
The peace.
The holy quietness.
The awe.
Little Baby, pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, pa rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring, pa rum pum pum pum
That’s fit to give the King, pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Shall I play for you, pa rum pum pum pum
On my drum?
Somewhere in life we often lose the holiness of our song—the song that was sung over us, for us, with us, and within us.
We live as if we’re asleep.
We dim the light of us.
We hide our true selves.
We think we have no gifts to bring the world.
And maybe what we do have to offer, doesn’t feel like enough.
What would it feel like to sing again? Or maybe for the first time? What would that bravery invite you into?
We forget that what we have to bring to the world, in the presence of who we are, is a beautiful song to all who get the honor of hearing it.
Mary nodded, pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him, pa rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him, pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Then He smiled at me, pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum
The Trinity is delighting in the beauty we reflect of Them in the world around us. The gift of Light we are to the world, need not be dimmed but shone for all to see.
The light of who we are is radiant to this world.
What would it do for your soul, dear reader, to imagine playing your life as a song to our Savior? What does it feel like knowing that He is smiling upon you playing it?
I imagine the Trinity whispering,
You are stunning.
You are brilliant.
You are treasured.
You are seen.
You are joy.
You are beautiful.
You are worthy.
You are loved.
Play, dear one.
Your drum is enough.
Play loud and proud for all to hear.
